Well I don’t want to say im competeing lol, because I am still quite novice, I am doing it to gain experience with Unity, and I chose EOC because I thought that would be fun and keep my interest.
At first I dabbled with what they used for kerbal space program where everytime you traveled a certain distance it would snap the entire world (and the origin) to the player. long story short it solved some problems while creating others.
my plan B is to have the star system (i.e. all the planets, stars, and triggers for spawning the interactible locations) be attached to the player, always moving away from the player, but at 99.99% the rate of speed, and the player would also be translating at a much slower speed.. if that makes sense. its hard to describe in words. I have an illustration in my sketchbook to help me. A lot of smoke and mirrors.
The picture is not in unity, Its in 3ds max and vray. I have unity footage but its nothing special thus far.

RichardSkinnerParticipantAn early game quality concept of the hanger with some activity.
the meshes are game quality but I am using vray to render, I would like to try to make some high res renders at some point for some cool shots
The idea I had for the game was to have a real time ship fitting system, instead of text based. You would select the ship you wanted to fly and it would undock and fly up to the fitting arm so you could see how the different loadouts would look on your ship

RichardSkinnerParticipantAnd to elaborate on the idea of modernizing the game, take that corvette model example, when you change your loadout, that ship will visually change more. More custom looking weapon pods (i.e. you will be able to tell the difference between a twinpack and a quadpack), more command section options, when you change the thrusters the engine part will change.
Images to come soon.

RichardSkinnerParticipantI used that Qstorm mod with the third light hard point on the top. sooo strong. I think they could have balanced it thought if they made it to where you couldn’t mount a jump drive to the storm petrel, meaning you would need to call jaffs if you wanted to venture outside hoffers wake. which would be a huge pain in the butt and so you wouldn’t use it all the time.
I always replace that tug with something whenever I do a play through.
my favorite is that Spartan old corvette, but I also like the police interceptor, the old iwar1 patcom, and executer which is super fragile

RichardSkinnerParticipantYea that sci fi violin is awesome. again makes you feel so small in such a huge space. like adrift. goes extremely well with all the UI sounds
in FACT, I remember a long long time ago (I think I got it form this site… maybe not) I downloaded that lights and sounds patch that put like a very soft ambient radio chatter to the inside of your cockpit. I loved that, got a new hard drive and now I cant find it anymore.
EOC, time splitters 2, and echo the dolphin are atop my list

RichardSkinnerParticipantIm looking forward to that no mans sky for ps4, that should be fun
total annihilation is also a classic. at one time tied my vote with EOC for best game ever
could you imagine if EOC was an MMORPG like eve? but instead of levels and dps and all that garbage it was based on peoples piloting skills and mastering of physics?
the stations and asteroid bases could be the POS’s and people would form up fleets to try and dominate the cluster

RichardSkinnerParticipantyea I used the mod to bring it back after act 0. I reduced its hitpoints to make it less OP, it had 2000! more then the patcom I think, I knocked it down to 800 lol. made me feel more like an xwing.
The advanced patcom was pretty good but the heavy corvette was too slow I would get killed constantly with the elite stuff turned on.
sorry this is turning into a storm petrel discussion
im listening to the soundtrack right now too. its so chill
while playing instant action my favorite view was the camera behind with no hud (f4 I think was the shortcut). I loved flying through the fork of the nova cruiser at high speed 😀

RichardSkinnerParticipantI like the idea. My fav mods were always those eliete and unleashed ones that made the NPC as well equiped as the player. I would do a lot of my own editing to them and ultimately make the game too unstable to play lol.
It always seemed that the game was so close to being perfect. like the systems were built correctly, but the designers just input the wrong values, in terms of making the traffic/cargo make more sence yadda yadda.
My fav was always the ifleet one where you could pirate actual ships and role with your own fleet compositions. it gave meaning to some of those cool civilian ships you saw flying around out there, making them troop transports or something for your marines
