Hello and welcome, pirate. 🙂
I think with your list of mandatory mods you’re already set for a very good game experience.
Since I’ve never finished the game (Yeah, I know…I have to, I’m the admin 😛 ) I don’t know about Torn Stars. But people say it’s eyecandy and really damn awesome, so I guess you should give it a try when you’re finished 🙂
I think others will step in soon and give you some more advice. 😉

adminKeymaster
As for the news article well there are still 54 hours to go of the promo so might be worth it?
All right, I made a quick’n’dirty article for it! 😉
Yeah, the old forum was a mess. I’m so glad that I was able to get rid of the buggy thing.
Edit: Now I noticed that I-War is categorized as a simulation, but I-War 2 is a shooter. Really, GOG? 😀

adminKeymasterNice to know and welcome to the forums, Green Steel! 😛
Little late for a news article, though 😛
The game won’t boot at all if it doesn’t detect an optical disk drive but this can be easily worked around by mounting an ISO image if you don’t have a DVD drive.
Yes, all editions of I-War 2 have this bug, we’ve covered all possible bugs in our Technical FAQ section here.

adminKeymaster
However, it might be worth a try to contact them directly. Schmatzler, can you do that?
I will contact GOG and Atari. Don’t get your hopes up, though 😛

adminKeymasterI don’t have any idea about what you’re doing there, but it feels like an old asteroids game. So I guess you got the mechanics just right 😛
