I agree with both of the above statements. What I liked about I-War 1 was the stringent storytelling with the branching storyline. That is stil something to search for in today’s computer game world. The only other notable game that does it is The Witcher 2.
Lux, what extra cluster do you mean? No need for spoilers, but as long as the game doesn’t break, I’d rather like to give it a visit.
What I most dislike about I-War 2 is that it stops half-way from being an X-style game. I mean, you can pirate, loot, take on assignments and all that, and you can trade a little bit, but it’s all half-baked IMHO. If I’d be able to dock (and save) on different stations the game would have been much easier. Also, if I’d be able to actually trade instead of just selling my loot the game would be more interesting.
You know, most of what would expand the game by a lot is already there, but it feels to me as if the player is on the one hand given free rein, while on the other hand forcing him with an iron fist on a specific path (that of piracy).
Also, the reputation system is lacking. You can attack virtually all ships out there without any kind of retribution, not only specifically Maas ships. Does that make sense? Also, does it make sense that an Indie’s son would attack and loot other indies’ ships? See what I mean?

7upManParticipantWell, I like Defiance so much that I bought the DVD for Season 1. In contrast to that, I really tried to get into Hyperdrive, which has good CGI, but it’s just not my kind of tea. I like my show to be a bit more serious to themselves. Same for red Dwarf. I still remember my initial reaction: “WTF?!?” ;-P

7upManParticipant
Cambragol: I know what you mean, unfortunately, if I’m next to an npc ship and they fire up their LDS, I can hear it, and I don’t think that’s changeable without some script modification to stop them making that noise, same goes for weapon sounds when they are close.
Maybe the radio static would be a solution here as well? After all, they’ll surely generate a strong EM field when firing up their LDS. You know, as in different types of static in contrast to what you actually hear being propagated through the hull.
7upMan: Thinking about the debris, it would be difficult as, if you think about it, if a ship explodes near you, the debris would happen almost instantaneously, whereas if it exploded far away, it would either be a short delay, or nothing at all. Unfortunately there can only be one sound for all situation, and so I don’t think it would be possible to cover that man, sorry 🙁
I know, I came to that conclusion the instant I had hit the Submit button. ;-P
Anyway, maybe cambragol, being as knowledgeable as he is, can tell if if would be feasible to a) input a distance meter into the game’s engine that calculates the distance as well as the trajectory of the ships and b) muffle and delay the debris crackling sound (via sound shader?) according to the calculations of the distance meter?
I have no idea if I-War 2 can work with sound shaders at all. I know Doom 3 could, and that’s roughly from the same time period, but they are very different games.

7upManParticipantYou just gave ma an idea: jaggardos, would it be possible to strongly muffle or even completely block the sound of external explosions and replace it with some static crackling and some crackling sound on the hull?
I’ll explain: My thinking goes along the lines that whenever a ship explodes, there is also an electro-magnetic reaction due to the exploding reactor. That would explain the static crackling. Also, there would be micro-debris that would clutter against your hull.
Now feel free to tell be if my idea is not feasible (or just plain stupid ^^), but maybe you’ll like it.

7upManParticipantBeautiful! Now if you only could get rid of the crackling noise, that would be great. Did you check if you are using the same sample rate/frequency as the original files? Are you using variable bitrate for the sound files? This often caused problems with legacy players back in the day.

7upManParticipant
Check your humor detector. 😉 Seriously, though, those of us who love Star Wars as adults do so almost without fail because we remember ANH, ESB and RotJ in their original, unadulterated (sans CGI) form.
You know, I always wondered why a company like ILM that was/is known for absolutely ground-breaking and stunning CGI work, did deliver such a sub-par job. I mean even at that time, the CGI effects were everything but convincing. How could they fail so badly?
That’s not to say that there aren’t things to like about the Special Editions and the prequel trilogy. “Duel of the Fates” alone does an awful lot to redeem them.
What exactly do you mean? In the Wikipedia, I only find this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duel_of_the_Fates. Do you really mean the music theme?

7upManParticipant
Add to it that evolution and atheism are now the only beliefs that can be legally taught in public schools,…
From what I hear, there’s a big movement in the so-called “Bible Belt” to change that, so that Creationism instead of Darwin’s evolution theory will be taught at schools. Can you share some insight if this is indeed true? Maybe the media reports we read are blown way out of proportion.
Germany:
– People are forced to pay for cheap TV programmes, even threatened with jail time if they can’t or won’t pay
Yeah, the state-sponsored public television is indeed on a long way down in terms of quality and political neutrality. However, this is the same with the British BBC that has a business model not unlike the German Public Broadcasting. However, if you are poor you can get exempted from paying the fees.
– There’s a lot of hatred against immigrants, politicians even debate to let them pay for using our roads
Well, as a former Dresdener I can tell you that what you hear in the news about PEGIDA is mostly bullshit, plain and simple. That’s why my question to Chessking about our media coverage of the Creationism movement at schools. I’ve simply come to distrust the mainstream media as a whole, seeing that most of German media belongs to (IIRC) four Big Media companies (Bertelsmann, Springer, Burda and Holtzbrinck).
– Bavaria is a state that is very different to all of the other 15. They claim to have the best school system but they behave like neandertals all the time. Also, religion plays a big role in Bavaria and is even taught at schools. Having the Christian cross in the classroom is standard in Bavaria.
Having lived in Munich for five years I can tell you that you can’t compare the people in Munich with Bavarians. Bavarians, especially those in the small villages and far-away valleys, are indeed very backward. Maybe this comes from their excessive inbreeding, I don’t know.
Also, in German schools you can choose between Religion and Ethics classes. At least in Eastern Germany the vast majority of parents decides for Ethics. Western Germany is more religious as a whole.
Still, to this day I have to meet a person who is in-your-face religious. Sure, some carry the fish (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ichthys) on the back of their cars, but it’s not too obvious. Then again, maybe my personal experiences are just different from yours.

I am an American, but that doesn’t have much to do with being a Christian.
It does have a lot to do with the strictness in which you adhere to your belief. You may have noticed that in European countries, even in the deeply catholic ones like Spain and Italy, people are less… how can I put it without offending you… well, strict (although the word I was looking for goes more in the direction of “fanatic”) than Americans. Really, religion plays for you guys a much much bigger role in everyday life than in Europe.
At the same time, the US are the biggest producer of porn material *in the whole world*! Also, drug abuse as a whole (alcohol, prescription medicine, illegal drugs) is highest in the US. And of course the very fact that you have an extremely lax relationship towards violence while at the same time going absolutely ballistic when seeing private female parts in public (Nipplegate, anyone? 😉 ).
Chessking, I’m not trying to insult you, I just point out that Americans tend to have a very strict beliefs towards morals, beliefs that not many other cultures can share.
