I got Elite: Dangerous last Sunday on a 25% summer sale on Steam, and it’s description can be summed up in one line.
It’s everything Unstable Space never was.
To elaborate, it’s got trading commodities with a dynamic economy, mining, pirates, bounty hunting, exploring 400,000,000,000 stars, huge factions with cold wars, hot wars, rubbing-shoulders-on-the-border wars, and probably about anything else I haven’t run across, all remarkably and amazingly polished. The flight model is pretty good, although not as good as EoC’s. It feels like a cross between EoC and IL-2, because the have some airplane-style stuff in there. It’s still addictively fun though. After this post – off to a conflict zone to blow stuff up! :cheer:
I highly recommend the game to anyone who likes space games, if you can swing 60 US dollars. If not – it’ll surely be on sale again.

Very little about the game is not known to me. Any questions you got, throw them at me. 🙂IronDukeParticipantI got Elite: Dangerous last Sunday on a 25% summer sale on Steam, and it’s description can be summed up in one line.

I gave this considerable thought some time ago, and arrived at a very enticing solution.
In Lucrecia’s will, she says the Biobombers were sent out from earth centuries ago. That would put them in the late 21st century or early 22nd. Also, they were completely unmanned, designed to have their mission fulfilled decades before people even got to where they were. They could use old, cheap monitors to reduce construction costs since no one would even be looking at them anyway. And I think that a station that big and complex would be expensive, so no need to raise the cost further.
Same thing goes for the bridge workstations in I-war1. Smaller, older stuff = cheaper ship. Also equals harder job for the crew though.
Also, they may not have been able to come up with anything cool enough to replace them.–IronDuke

Very little about the game is not known to me. Any questions you got, throw them at me. 🙂IronDukeParticipantMy older brother roped me into I-war 2. (Mostly because I asked…) I used to play Search and Rescue (a helicopter flight sim) and when I first spotted the comsec’s cockpit on his screen, I asked if it was a very cool chopper. 😆 In my defense, he was on the other end of the room.
So after watching him play for a few hours (act 1 – much piracy grabbed me attention!) I asked him to install it on my computer. He did so and I spent the next nine months playing the campaign. I finally finished, rather spooked by the Chaos Aliens (they were cool though,) but it took me another couple years to get I-war 1. I heard it was on GOG, so I bought it and hammered through the story in a few weeks, which is also how long it takes me now to get through the I-war 2 story.
Speaking of, the EoC story didn’t make much sense when I first played, but I was seven at the time. I didn’t even know half the words they used, so… Since then, I scrutinized the story to figure it out, and it’s epic.–IronDuke

Very little about the game is not known to me. Any questions you got, throw them at me. 🙂IronDukeParticipant-I’ve improved the lighting, shadows, and extended the camera range by 100 times.
-Created a custom script for localized gravity. (The only gravity Unity has by default affects the whole scene.)
-Orbital mechanics are next on the list!
-I’m also working on a very preliminary cockpit/bridge for the Phoenix.
-I’ve also been tinkering with concepts and trying to figure out how the heck the mesh of a model can be modified at runtime. I know you can simply set the vertex positions, but I can’t figure out which vertices belong to which tris. The tris are just an array of ints… Once I figure it out you’ll be able to carve your name on another ship’s hull, and if you use a strong enough beam, you can look at the other side and see it backwards ’cause the beam went through… 😛I just wish I knew of a good way to reduce shadow z-fighting. It’s chronic.
Development is not going very quickly, because I’m a crazy multi-tasker, so I’ve got three other projects in Unity that are seeing the same level of progress. I’ve also got school, The Expanse book series to work through, Babylon5, and latest, Elite: Dangerous. Just got it Sunday. But, I promise that this game, if any, will reach a playable state. When I look at what I’ve envisioned for it, I like it way too much to let up.

Any questions you got, throw them at me. 🙂IronDukeParticipantI’ve had that happen, almost always when your ship’s “threat” level, specified in the ini files of the ship and its various subsystems, is a high number or you’re in the patcom. As far as I can tell, it’s just in the game for atmosphere. After the other guy takes off for a randomly designated location, the script running whatever he’s doing ends, so nothing really happens. I just ignore them now.
BTW, I forgot to mention that on my storm petrel, I gave light hardpoints the ability to carry regular PBCs. The PBC did get a lot weaker, because more were carried and on lighter ships, but it did enable the storm petrel to take on anything up to destroyer size. It also let you have greater firepower on the comsec, because quad lite PBCs really did get weakened in my weapons rebalance.–IronDuke

Very little about the game is not known to me. Any questions you got, throw them at me. 🙂IronDukeParticipantI’ve been watching videos of the game on Youtube (Isinona’s videos are especially cool) and it seems to have a Newtonian flight model like I-war2’s, the only difference being that you can’t do a thruster override past the throttle limit and the maneuverability doubles in a sweet zone around 50% throttle.
It’s on my wishlist, but I can’t pay $60 USD for it just yet, so I’ll wait till it goes on sale. Besides, development of my own game beckons…
Incidentally, I do like some sandbox games, which is why I might like this game, but the continuous Internet required is something of a trip-up. I’ve mentioned before that my working computer doesn’t have Internet. Still, it would be fun.–IronDuke
P.S. They were planning an offline mode for it, but removed that feature late in the beta on the grounds that it took away from the ever-changing, evolving experience the players get since the universe would not be able to be updated. Part of the game’s appeal is that it has an ongoing story, influenced by the players’ combined actions or lack thereof and an almighty hand behind the main server. :p
