This topic is dedicated to the Storm Petrel. It is carrying over the discussion that started in the “What do you DISLIKE aboout I-War2?” topic.
I wonder how the Storm Petrel compares to the Executor class Interceptor, Wasp class Navy fighter, and the Hornet class Police fighter.

One of the old devs in the GOG forum said, that the Storm Petrel was way too powerful and that may have been one of the reasons why they ditched it.
That is a very interesting point. They give a powerful ship before you know how to use it, and then take it away so that as you get better, the game can still be challenging, adding to the steep learning curve. It is strange, though, that they leave you in the Tug for half of the game. If I were Cal, I would sell the Tug and buy a Storm Petrel. After all of this, I must once again congratulate Cambrogal and Torn Stars. That mod gives you this freedom.

I think they could have balanced it thought if they made it to where you couldn’t mount a jump drive to the storm petrel, meaning you would need to call jaffs if you wanted to venture outside hoffers wake. which would be a huge pain in the butt and so you wouldn’t use it all the time.
I always replace that tug with something whenever I do a play through.
my favorite is that Spartan old corvette, but I also like the police interceptor, the old iwar1 patcom, and executer which is super fragile

29. April 2015 at 2:09 #17385ChesskingParticipantThe Qstorm was a practice project for the person who made it. In the same way, I made the “Rusty” mod, but I didn’t add a hardpoint. This is for two reasons. First, I don’t know how. Second, I didn’t want the mod to affect gameplay in any way. However, earlier in this topic I discussed removing a hardpoint, lowering the hull points, and putting it up for sale (for a cheap price) in Torn Stars.

29. April 2015 at 5:18 #17387IronDukeParticipantIn the mod I was making, I re-balanced the Storm Petrel to be somewhat weaker. It was still one of the fastest ships in game, but the quad light PBCs became much lighter. The ship was unparalleled at destroying other small ships, even to tug size, but anything larger would barely scratch it. A five second firing of twin quad lights against a heavy corvette only brought its health down by 5%. It could shred fighters, though. Also, the hull became weaker, so a single missile hit would kill it. Much of combat was spent dodging missiles until the enemy stops firing them, then engaging.
It was very, very fun in instant action, tearing up fighters, patcoms, and tugs, but corvettes and the police patcoms took some doing, usually with wingman aid. And any capital ship that came through would HAVE to be destroyed by the wingmen.–IronDuke

Very little about the game is not known to me. Any questions you got, throw them at me. 🙂29. April 2015 at 5:56 #17389ChesskingParticipantYour Storm Petrel sounds much more tactical, just the way a company would have designed it. For a single player mission or game, it would be necessary to use a different, more capable ship. In a fleet, however, the Storm Petrel would be an essential strategic tool. For example, if their was an Independence War Fleet Commander game, the Storm Petrel would be use to fight small ships, Corvettes would take middle sized ships, and Capital ships would attack other Capital ships and stations. Tugs would be used primarily for transport of gunstars, but probably more often as an inferior but useful fighting force.

2. May 2015 at 12:05 #17437RichardSkinnerParticipantso what did everyone name their stolen tug at the beginning of act 1 out of curiosity? im assuming iron duke named his iron duke…
I was savvy to the Black PIG, that ugly ass tug desered no better

2. May 2015 at 21:18 #17440ChesskingParticipantI unfortunately chose Black Pig. Southern Cross is definitely a better name for a ship.

3. May 2015 at 0:09 #17448adminKeymasterI also chose Black Pig and immediately regretted it when all the other guys weren’t happy about it. D:
But then again, Jafs is always complaining… 😀

3. May 2015 at 9:42 #17456IronDukeParticipant“Iron Duke” would have been nice, but there is a fixed set of names for the tug. The heavy corvette is named “Iron Duke” by default, and the patcom “Sheffield.” The tug is the only one you get to pick the name for. So first time around, I picked “Southern Cross,” but since I’ve played the game over thirty times, I’ve tried all of them. My favorite so far is “Lamb Chop,” just because our illustrious engineer Smith has such an amusing reaction to it. 😆
–IronDuke
P.S. My name “IronDuke” reflects the fact that the heavy corvette is my favorite ship. I can play the vanilla (unmodded) Instant Action in it for any amount of time and NEVER die. I mean, I’ve played over five hours non-stop with it before, just to see how long I could do it, with over a hundred capital ship kills before it was dinner time.

P.S. You should upload your “tactical Storm Petrel”.

3. May 2015 at 20:11 #17463RichardSkinnerParticipantthats right… the IronDuke was the corvette. It’s been awhile since I’ve went through the campaign, whenever I play its usually the endgame free form mode.
off topic..
Since this appears to be the largest “active” I war community these days, has anyone ever tried to get a multiplayer game going?
I have only ever seen one game going on in the multiplayer screen and that was like 9 or 10 years ago… I regrette not trying to join it
The Priceline Negotiator
3. May 2015 at 20:15 #17465adminKeymasterMultiplayer was based on GameSpy and that has been shut down at the end of 2014. So it won’t work anymore.
A few weeks ago I’ve tried to get it running with the QTracker servers, since these are the GameSpy successor nowadays:
http://www.qtracker.com/master-gamespy.php
It didn’t work though. When I have more time, I’ll contact the developer there, maybe he can get it to work again.

5. May 2015 at 21:01 #17526ChesskingParticipantI found that quite a while ago, by browsing through images. It definitely gives a different perspective on the ship. The maker’s goal was to explain how a small fighter can work in the world of I-War, since lengthy descriptions are given for larger ships, such as the Dreadnought, but not for small ships. This page has links to more images and information.
