I share exactly the same sentiments about Elite. I had cancelled my donation to Elite on Kickstarter back in the day because of how utterly bad and laze the campaign had started. To this day, I don’t regret it. E:D is NOT the game I was looking for.
I had the opposite response. When I play EoC, I usually play the campaign right up to the point where I have access to the rest of the Badlands, and then I stop and just fly around doing my own thing. If I get bored I’ll advance it to the point where all the Maas ships turn red and then stop again.
Elite’s definitely got a way to go before it’s a game, but it’s shaping up to be just what I’m after. Of course, I’m the kind of person who will play the Traveller pen-and-paper RPG (http://www.farfuture.net) solo. So sandboxes are right up my alley.
I was finally able to get this beast working again by soldering a USB to Gameport adapter, especially made for the FF Pro. Hooray! B)
Now I just need to find a case for this thing.

28. March 2017 at 23:55 #19543adminKeymasterIf you buy one for me, I’ll sure do! π

28. March 2017 at 23:59 #195447upManParticipantFunny thing: Just today I found an offer for a cheap but apparently very good 3D printer: https://hobbyking.com/de_de/malyan-metal-3d-printer-m200-2.html
However, apparently it’s out of stock on this website (but still available over Alibaba), and I found one review that states it’s good. I asked the German c’t magazine if they can review it. If they do that and the printer turns out to be good, it will be mine, as 200 β¬ is what I’m ready to shell for such a thing.
29. March 2017 at 18:49 #19545IronyManParticipantHoy, Hackaday reviewed a printer that I think is essentially the same but for the logo on it. http://hackaday.com/2016/06/13/review-monoprice-mp-select-mini-3d-printer/ Is that the one you already saw?
Thank you for bringing this to my attention; I may have to get one. Been looking for a cheap printer for a while.
29. March 2017 at 21:51 #195477upManParticipantAs the user billbradford says (http://hackaday.com/2016/06/13/review-monoprice-mp-select-mini-3d-printer/#comment-3054326): The printer is actually made by Malyan. Apparently, what you linked to is either a re-brand or a copy. But hey, that’s the beauty of Chinese products: Once one manufacturer gets something right, others will surely step in and copy his work down to the last bolt. π
Link to Malyan: http://malyansys.com/en/product/m200/
I just noticed: The original Malyan printer has two fans, while the Infitary/Monoprice only has one. But this is only according to their website, Hobbyking.com sells the Malyan M200 (with four different power plugs, US, UK, EU, and AU) with only one fan. Strange. Then again, despite the issues named in the article, it’s still a very interesting product. And Christmas nine months from now… π

23. March 2018 at 1:57 #19654SarxisParticipantYeah I was thinking about loading it up again just to take a look once more. I have an old savegame archived with a ton of money and goodies and the game pretty much beat.

24. March 2018 at 0:42 #19656adminKeymasterI’m also still playing in 2018.
I recently built myself a retro PC, mostly from spare parts I found in the trash.
Pentium 3 1.4GHz, Windows 98SE, GeForce 4 Ti4800, 1.5GB memory. πIt’s fun to play the game as it was intended. At 1024×768, with a 4:3 aspect ratio.
Maybe it’s the skill I’ve acquired over the years, but the game seems to play much easier.I can’t exactly pin down why.
Maybe the hit detection works better or there are less bugs in general. Or it’s just my imagination.Still haven’t finished the game, though. It still takes ages to travel to destinations and the game can be very unforgiving sometimes. Dying and having to do a whole mission again for half an hour sure isn’t the best part of I-War 2. π

24. March 2018 at 1:25 #19658ChesskingParticipantI am still playing in 2018. Well, I-war 1 anyways. I just started on Defiance.
Dying and having to do a whole mission again for half an hour sure isn’t the best part of I-War 2.
In Defiance, you can load the game from a checkpoint when you die. It sure saves a lot of time.
I have also been working on a retro machine. It is considerably worse than Schmatzler’s and has difficulty with most 3D games. I wonder if it can run I-war 1…

24. March 2018 at 1:53 #19660adminKeymasterI-War 2 even works on an S3 Savage with 8MB of VRAM. Granted, only at 640×480, but it is playable at that resolution! π
I am impressed that they made it so backwards compatible. But if I recall correctly, Stephen Robertson has said on GOG that the developers didn’t have very great machines either and were mostly working at a maximum of 800×600.
What are your specs? As long as you’re not powering an ATI Rage and a Pentium 1, you should be good to go! π
Space. The final frontier.
24. March 2018 at 1:56 #19662ChesskingParticipantIt is an ATI Rage with 8mb vram, and I think it has a Pentium 2. I think it only has 333mb of RAM. It is running Windows 2000.

24. March 2018 at 2:14 #19664adminKeymasterNot ideal, but if you swap out the ATI Rage with a 3Dfx Voodoo, you can run Defiance with hardware acceleration and even with blurry stars! <3
And a TNT2 M64 could help you getting I-War 2 to run.
