Given the fact, that Independence War are SciFi games, there must be some of you guys out there who enjoy the occasional space opera π (I hope I’m right).
Which series or movies have you enjoyed in the past? Are you watching some at the moment?
I’ve watched almost any SciFi series one could imagine. Most of them are pretty cool, although I have some hate candidates. Seriously, never watch StarHunter! π
The last SciFi related movie I watched was “Automata” with Antonio Banderas. It has its philosophical moments about life and moral judgement but most of the time it is very cheap, unfortunately.
The last series I really enjoyed was the new Battlestar Galactica. I watched Babylon 5 after all the Star Trek series and I think, B5 is way better and not overly hyped by the masses.
What do you think? Did I miss some good stuff? I don’t want to miss anything SciFi related π
Space. The final frontier.
25. January 2015 at 7:19 #16992cambragolParticipantI actually liked Automata a lot. It did not over do itself, which is likely what most ‘AI’ stories are going to do in the years to come.
Battlestar Galactica was great, until the last episode, which I tried to immediately erase from my mind as it ruined the whole series. Never Watch It.
Europa Report was good. Moon.
As far as space-opera goes, I can’t think of any. Star Wars has left no room for other visions. Except the new Star Trek. Which is great. And Guardians of the Galaxy. Which is a space-opera I suppose.

26. January 2015 at 14:56 #169967upManParticipantPacific Rim. Yeah, really, sometimes I’m in the mood for some mindless sci-fi action flick with huge robots fighting monsters. π
Other than that, I love unknown high-quality classics like B5 and Firefly (liked Serenity too), but also newer shows like Almost Human and Eureka (non-space shows). And yes, BSG should go without saying. I don’t know anyone who *didn’t* like that show.
26. January 2015 at 23:10 #17002MidgardsormrParticipantB5, BSG, and Firefly of course. ST and SW also go without saying.
I thought Caprica was an interesting idea, and it was just starting to get to the cool sci-fi stuff when it was canned. No pun intended. They should have led with the good stuff instead of trying to build it up slowly.
If you enjoy time travel stories, check out Continuum. The fourth season should be starting soon. The three existing seasons are available on Netflix. In brief, 70 years from now, a group of terrorists manage to escape their own execution by traveling into the past (today). A cop equipped with high-tech gear accidentally follows them back and is trying to prevent them from changing the future to be more to their liking.

I never got into Star Wars like half the planet does. I think it is overly hyped and a big money machine for Disney nowadays. I hope they don’t make it worse like they did TRON.
I watched all the movies, of course. Nothing special, but not bad either. The same goes with Star Trek – the first series is like a time machine and a nice view into the 1960s and that makes it special, but everything that came after has been superseded by other series.
BTW, while we are talking about Star Trek – I really enjoy Star Trek: Continues. They do an outstanding job in continuing the original ST series in every way. Post-processing, set and actors are very close to the original.

I didn’t enjoy this show at all. I’ve stopped watching it after season 2. All the time travel stuff got me confused very fast and I was just “out”. All that ever happened there was “Guys attacking here, guys attacking there, next episode” – a little boring for me. π
However, I recently watched the movie “Predestination” – an astonishing movie. It wasn’t quite what I expected about time travel, but I can’t tell anything more because that would give away the whole ending. It’s definitely worth a watch, though:

Aaaaaand – no one mentioned Stargate yet! Stargate has everything! Moral, Justice, some badass main characters, powerful enemies, awesome CGI…just skip Universe (well, the 3 hours of intro were good) and you have one of the best SciFi series out there.
Europa Report was good. Moon.
Europa Report was outstanding for a low-budget film. The only thing that bothered me was the fact, that they couldn’t decide whether to stand or to float in space. It was still very enjoyable π

27. January 2015 at 6:38 #17009MidgardsormrParticipant! How did I forget Stargate!? SG-1 was a big reason I got into my current line of work, which is visual effects for television.
I do think they should have wrapped it up a little earlier than they did. The Ori were poorly executed, in my opinion.

http://www.bryanray.name27. January 2015 at 15:25 #170147upManParticipantNah, don’t care for Stargate at all, none of the various shows. Too cheesy?
The same goes for Star Wars. Everyone is crazy about it, but while I have seen all the six movies, I just don’t get it. It’s like a child’s story, and I always wondered how grown-ups could get into it.
The same goes for Star Trek. I did enjoy the two new JJ Abrams ST movies immensely, though. They were the exact opposite of the last ST movies with the TNG crew, directed by Frakes. The Borg Queen, anyone? God that was so bad…
I just hope that new upcoming TV show The Expanse will be any good. The trailer on YouTube looks promising though not necessarily close to the books. But that doesn’t need to be a bad thing, as seen in Game of Thrones.
27. January 2015 at 19:07 #17021adminKeymasterThe Ori were poorly executed, in my opinion.
I absolutely loved the Ori. Fanatic conquerors driven by their religion and hatred for everything that stood against it – that is material for badass villains.
I also loved the shots when they were just standing in front of the Stargate reading their bible while destroying the whole planet – beautiful! I thought their appearance was way too short – I mean, Apophis was around way longer than the Ori (and no offense, but I always thought he looked a little bit cliche-homosexual).

I’m not alone! Someone finally understands me! :woohoo:
For me, Jar Jar Binks really killed it. Some utterly bad CGI thing CAN ruin a whole movie.Does anybody here know “Seven Days”? It just came into my mind. It’s a TV show about time travel, but it’s comedic and messes with all the Science Fiction shows that were out at that time.
At one time, the protagonist steps out of his time capsule in a park and there is a guy asking him were he came from. His response: “Don’t worry, we’re doing a low-budget science fiction series”. I never laughed so hard.

I agree, which is why I was disappointed in the hokey-cheesy way they were done. I do agree with you about Apophis, though. He definitely stuck around way too long. Baal was the best villain in Stargate, and there was regrettably too little of him.
See, there’s your problem. There are only three Star Wars movies. Those other three are just fan films.
Oh, and I don’t know how someone could not like Tron: Legacy. It’s the most epic music video I’ve ever seen. They really shortchanged Boxleitner, though, considering his character’s name was the title.

Never heard of that one. I’ll look for it.

A New Hope was episode four in the series even before it was first released, but it was originally called just “Star Wars” to keep from confusing audiences. Although episodes 1, 2, and 3 may not have been as good as the original trilogy, I don’t think they could be called fan films.

However, I think that the new trilogy (Episodes 7, 8, and 9 [still under construction]) and the Star Wars: Clone Wars cartoon series don’t belong with the first six episodes, as they change some of the underlying information behind the Star Wars universe. For example: now there are story lines where a machine or process gives an individual the power of the Force. Originally, all Jedi were born with the Force.

28. January 2015 at 5:43 #17040MidgardsormrParticipantCheck your humor detector. π Seriously, though, those of us who love Star Wars as adults do so almost without fail because we remember ANH, ESB and RotJ in their original, unadulterated (sans CGI) form. The so-called “Special Edition” mostly weakened the films, and the further additions in the Blu-Ray versions watered them down further. Then came the prequel trilogy, and we just heaved a big sigh of disappointment.
That’s not to say that there aren’t things to like about the Special Editions and the prequel trilogy. “Duel of the Fates” alone does an awful lot to redeem them. But on the whole, I find that treating them as Lucas’ fan films for his own universe makes me feel better about them.

You know, I always wondered why a company like ILM that was/is known for absolutely ground-breaking and stunning CGI work, did deliver such a sub-par job. I mean even at that time, the CGI effects were everything but convincing. How could they fail so badly?

What exactly do you mean? In the Wikipedia, I only find this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duel_of_the_Fates. Do you really mean the music theme?
29. January 2015 at 21:19 #17055MidgardsormrParticipantI think most of the problem was the production design. There’s a reason that most of the best CG is found in movies with a lot of darkness and fast cuts. The technology wasn’t quite ready for long, lingering closeup shots on CG characters in full sunlight. And the design of the characters themselves was so goofy.

Yep, I mean the music. The score always been the best part of Star Wars, but Williams knocked it out of the park with that piece.

I love like 90% of this stuff, too. When we’re talking about space, I also remembered two good space comedy series:
“Red Dwarf” – a series that was very popular in Britain in the 90s and got rebooted a few years ago. If you think that jumping out of a plane while riding an alligator and shooting Nazis is good humor, that’s certainly a series for you.

and “Hyperdrive” – Nick Frost is in it, so…yeah. I like Nick Frost.

Extant, Defiance“Not so good” is an understatement. They are horrible. Extant has some nice effects and animations, Defiance can’t even compete with that. Blergh.
