Okay, so I have a couple questions, and I felt like it would not be right to clutter up the forum by posting two separate threads.
First, I was wondering about how Turret Fighters handle the power requirements and heat generation of the various energy weapons. I currently have both T-Fighters equipped with Cryo PBCs since that seems like the best fit for such a tiny ship. However, I recently… “found” a Heavy PBC somewhere in the Badlands (And I still haven’t progressed past the old tug! Not bad, huh?), and I want to know if it would be a good idea to equip one of them with it, or if I should just stick with the Cryo PBCs.
Also, concerning things that I “found” in the Badlands… I’ve been using the Marauder attacks to my advantage. When I detect a distress signal, I check to see if they have any cargo using the third person camera mode, then if they have cargo, I close in to around 120 kilometers (With Passive Sensors 3) or so and wait for the Marauders to kill them all and leave. Then, I take all the cargo in the area for myself. So, the obvious question is this; am I a monster?
Overthinking is kind of a habit of mine.

Power, heat, and stealth do not apply to NPCs. Weapon capacity doesn’t either, actually. This has irked me for years.
I did a mod to put dual Assault Cannons (not Gatlings – I’m talking about the energy weapon!) on them and they didn’t even care.
Thing 2
Yes. πΏ You are a criminal who tried to assassinate the owner of a corporation, and have brought death to many transport pilots and their escorts in the name of booty.
(It’s a video game; don’t worry about it. I play this game because it’s the only way within the sight of God that I can be a horrible criminal. That, and spaaaaaaaaaaace.)–IronDuke

Very little about the game is not known to me. Any questions you got, throw them at me. π28. April 2016 at 6:02 #18879AdmiralZeratulParticipantThat’s a shame about the power, heat, and stealth not applying to NPCs. I guess I can feel free to equip them with the heaviest guns I’ve got, in that case. Ha, no wonder T-Fighter technology is referred to as “experimental”.
In my defense, those corporate scumbags all totally had it coming. I usually don’t kill independent transporter pilots. But yeah, I must admit that I’m not that much better morally than my enemies. Oh well.

28. April 2016 at 10:16 #18883ChesskingParticipantYeah, I know. One of the problems in the game is the inability to make a moral living. Even after you join the league, and become the most important character in the rebellion, you rely on pirating independent or non-threatening freighters for a living. On the other hand, I don’t suppose NSO Laplace will miss a couple of mega-freighters, right?
I must admit, I have witnessed a few Marauder attacks myself. Sometimes, I wipe out the marauders, and then force the freighters to pay me with more that a pod of water bottles, before they leave. π

To be honest, I never really cared for the whole “space truck simulator” aspect of some other space sims. I suspect that I might be in the minority on this, but running trade routes bores me fairly quickly in any game, no matter the genre. The piracy mechanics have always been one of my favorite things about I-War 2, along with its epic story, its rich and fascinating universe, and its Newtonian flight model.

Haha yep. It’s a fair price for their lives, I’m sure. Wouldn’t you agree that losing your cargo is not nearly as bad as dying? To be honest, I’d offer the escort ships the chance to surrender too if the game let me do that, but the most they ever do is run away, just to come back later for more. The way I see it, if they are so determined to get themselves killed, I see no reason not to give them their wish.

3. May 2016 at 20:25 #188997upManParticipantHm, interesting. I think IW2 would have been even better if that space trucking would have been part of the game. That way, you could earn your living honestly and at the same time pursue your vendetta against Maas. I’m with Chessking in that it irks me that you NEED to be a pirate no matter what your standing is.
It’s something like TES3: Morrowind, where you could own entire castles and have the highest standing of a faction, just to be greeted like a normal peasant.
3. May 2016 at 21:30 #18910ChesskingParticipantIt makes sense that you are a pirate in the beginning, but later on it should not be as necessary. It would be easy to implement bounty hunting missions and paid missions by the League into the game, as well. Everything the League gives you benefits them as well, so why can’t they pay you more? Why shouldn’t they give their best pilot the best ship and weapons they have? Even the ability to buy technology from them using… whatever you get when you recycle cargo, I cannot remember what it is called… would decrease the need for piracy, while benefiting the League and the player.
They do give you the patcom and corvette later in the game, but you still rely on piracy to get some decent weapons and systems on the thing.
4. May 2016 at 5:33 #18916IronDukeParticipantInteresting thoughts. Having been merely 7 when I first played the game, and used to games like RCT or Putt-Putt at the time, I was absolutely mesmerized by the story line. There was no way I could have found fault with it. Even now, when I play, I am transported back to the world of delight I first experienced in the game. It’s very difficult for me to be startled by plot holes or inconsistencies, I’ve gotten so used to them. Especially since I didn’t realize they were unrealistic until long after they became normal.
Possibly when I re-write the story for my mod I’ll see whether I can improve on this. I certainly won’t remove the piracy elements; they are a big part of what hooked me into this game in the first place! But I’ll see if they can be expanded upon. π–IronDuke

Any progress on your mod? It sounds quite ambitious, and I look forward to seeing your planned improvements in-game.

My summer is positively jam-packed, but I’m making progress at this very moment in a little space project for this month. I still think I’ll be able to get out an Instant Action in Unity by the end of summer, but don’t write that down or anything.*–IronDuke
*Oops, I just did. :silly:

Yeah, I read that thread. Maybe I’m biased (like all of us, right?), but I’ve got a good feeling that something great has started here on this forum. I may not have the skills to help you guys with the technical side of things, but I support your efforts 100%.
I recently started a gaming channel on YouTube with my girlfriend, so perhaps I’ll get to do a video about your project eventually.

If the project is finished someday, we will need people to do this stuff to get the word out. Thanks!
I remember when Richard Skinner was doing an I-War 2 remake in Unity…

21. October 2016 at 5:13 #19374BozobubParticipantThis is a necro, but…
The “Torn Stars”/”Unstable Space”/”Traffic” (can’t find a d/l here for Traffic, might be at the Torn Stars site, just google it, but I dunno if they ever released a working version of it) conversion mod lets you be a “space trucker” just fine, if you like. Or pirate. Or whatevs.
