Shooting of flitter

I need some help please. I’m in the mission where you scout out the Marauder’s system. I managed to find all of the bases and acquire a flitter. The problem is when I go back to HQ, the gunstars pound the daylights out of the flitter. I’ve even tried approaching close to the base to see if there was some dialog, but the gunstars opened up on me when I got inside of 11 km. Could someone tell me what I’ve missed? I’ve looked through the FAQ’s, but it doesn’t look as if anyone else has had this problem. Thanks in advance for the help.
